2015 will go down as the year whenever the Dublin senior footballers began their crusade of winning the five in a row but before the championship began the hurling stronghold of Tipperary managed to beat them in the Eirgrid under 21 All Ireland football championship. While the Dublin footballers went onto to win five senior championships in a row, the furthest the Tipperary senior footballers went was a semi-final appearance in the All Ireland championship. Could this eventually become a sign of things to Come?

Steven O’Brien capped off an incredible display with one of the two late scores that secured Tipperary a first-ever Eirgrid All-Ireland U21 football final place. The midfielder was outstanding and swooped in injury-time along with the team’s top scorer Kevin O’Halloran.

In the process, the then Munster champions dumped holders and favourites Dublin out.

But they (Tipperary) were poor from then on and only drew level late on when they enjoyed a brief spell of dominance. It was a tight and tense opening and with 21 minutes on the clock, there’d been just five scores exchanged. Dublin held a narrow 0-3 to 0-2 lead, though Tipp was arguably the happier as they played into the teeth of a stiff breeze.

The Dubs crucially finished the half strongly with four points before the interval to finally put some daylight between the teams. Dublin outscored Tipp by three points in this period to take a 0-7 to 0-3 half-time lead. Conor McHugh weighed in with four first-half points in total while fellow seniors Shane Carthy and Cormac Costello also got scores. It was a significant burst as Dublin had found themselves behind in the second half of all three of their previous games in the Leinster championship, against Laois, Longford and Kildare.

But Tipp’s response was impressive and four points without reply signalled their intent.

Josh Keane, senior star Colin O’Riordan, O’Brien and Liam Casey were all on the mark for Tipp.

Tipp had a strong momentum on their side and finally drew level in the 49th minute at 0-9 to 0-9 when Keane converted his third free of the afternoon. Dublin had their chances.

But Tipp continued to press their advantage and back to back O’Halloran points moved them two clear.

Dublin did draw level eventually at 0-12 apiece thanks to points from Costello and sub-David Campbell. Tipp wasn’t to be denied and scores from O’Brien and O’Halloran in the 61st and 62nd minutes sealed a famous win. When Dublin play Tipperary in the football it is always a famous encounter as it was the game that took place in the All-Ireland football championship senior men’s final in 1920 which now known as bloody Sunday.

Back in 2015 after the game, the Tipperary manager Tommy Toomey was speaking to Tipp Fm about the win. Toomey said; “You know as this team moves along, we just build on the momentum you know. Today was a fantastic game you know that the lads took everything out of themselves and you know there is great credit due to the players all around. They never gave any thought when they were four or five points down. They just dug it out until the ball went over the bar and look at it. Once the lads let go they really relaxed and enjoyed the game. The players really enjoyed playing away from the pressures of winning. You know that’s a sport. Hopefully, it will be a bit of a step again for Tipperary”.
